Umenede Orphancare Project Delta State, Nigeria
Background
ASK recently decided to provide funding to the Umenede Orphancare Project in Umenede, Delta State, Nigeria.
Umenede is a market town about 100kms from Abuja, the capital of Nigeria. Its local authority is Delta State, whose provincial capital is Asaba.
The UmenedeOrphancare Project looks after around 20 children between the ages of four and seventeen years. The children are mainly orphans or street children who have been abandoned by their parents and now live rough on the street. They are removed from the street environment by Orphancare staff and placed in the Orphancare building.
The children are looked after by adult volunteers, who are paid on a sporadic basis, and when money is available. There are always four volunteers on duty. When possible, the children attend local schools, but as education is not free in Nigeria, many of them are taught by the volunteers.
The project is greatly in need for, amongst other things, a generator which can be used to support the unreliable electricity supplied by the town. This would make a great difference to the children, as they could be provided with lighting and the use of electrical appliances on a 24/7 basis.
ASK recently provided £2,000 for the project, but funds are still urgently required. These children are not in physical danger, but suffer from poverty of aspiration and can only anticipate a life of need and want. The Umunede Orphancare Project gived them an opportunity to create a dignified and succesful life.
