Background
Thousands of children live in urban squats and experience extreme poverty, hunger and abuse. Many children end up on the streets trying to earn money for themselves for their family to survive. Without suypport and help children increasingly get drawns into drugs, criminal activities and prostitution.
The Drisha Project runs learning activities for children in centres owned by local communities. Two currently exist, helping 87 children. Basic literacy and numeracy is tauight, children get one meal a day, new clothing and medical care is provided.
Action for Street Kids has funded the project since 2004: this money has been used towards covering both running costs and educational materials. So far ASK has donated a total of £16,500 to the Drisha Project.
The project aims ultimately to open 11 learning centers in Bangalore.
