The Better Life Christian Social Association - El Salam City, Eygpt
Background
The Better Life Association, founded in 1985, runs a project located in the slums of El Salam City, 5 miles outside Cairo. Against a backdrop of overcrowding, malnutrition, disease and unemplyment, the Better Life Association provides a refuge and the possability of an education to sokme of the city's thousands of street children. Many of these children have been forced into life on the streets through extreme poverty, and in order to feed themselves the engage in hazardous activities. UNICEF estimates that up to 15% of Egyptian children aged 6-14 are currently working in such activities. Schools in the deprived are of El Salam City constantly under perform, which, combined with high illiteracy rates, means that education is valued neither by parents nor by the children themselves. It is for this reason that Better Life's work is so vital to the Christaian community in El Salam, providing children with a unique opportunity to pursue education.
